Ján Žabka is a Czech-Slovak chemical physicist. He graduated from the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University in Prague. He has been working at the J. Heyrovský Institute of Physical Chemistry since 1992. His main scientific interest is the laboratory study of reactions of ions and molecules in planetary atmospheres. He also has experience in the design of mass spectrometers.

In the newly established department of Space chemistry and technology he collaborates with Bernd Abel. This department is developing new methods and a new generation of mass analysers for in-situ research on extraterrestrial material during future space missions. In parallel, the most accurate laboratory anologues of the space environment are being developed. These will be used to test the analytical instruments in the corresponding environment and also to create matching databases for a more accurate determination of the composition of extraterrestrial samples.
